Sean, the consortium (Apple, Microsoft, and others) that bought the Nortel patent portfolio asked Google to join them when the bidding got higher than expected but Google refused. The $12billion Motorola purchase wasn't even on the table until 5 weeks ago and is not the silver bullet Lyons wishes it was. The motivations of all the competitors is not crystal clear but there are plenty of opinions out there:
